6 Tips to Help You Prevent Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a condition that affects the toes and can cause them to become bent in an unnatural position. This can lead to pain, discomfort, and difficulty walking. In some cases, it can also cause corns and calluses to develop on the toes. 1.  Wear shoes that fit properly

3.  Use padding to protect your toes

If you already have a hammertoe, or you are at high risk for developing it, you may want to use padding to protect your toes. There are a variety of products available, including toe caps and toe crest, that can be used to cushion the toes and reduce pressure on them. You can also use moleskin or other protective materials to cover any areas of your feet that are prone to blisters or calluses.


4.  Strengthen your feet and toes

Strong muscles and tendons can better support your toes and keep them in proper alignment. You can strengthen your feet and toes by doing exercises such as picking up marbles or small objects with your toes and using a toe stretcher or looped band to stretch and strengthen your toes. You can also try balance exercises such as standing on one foot or walking on your heels.

5.  Maintain a healthy weight

Excess weight can put extra pressure on your feet and toes, which can contribute to the development of hammertoe. Try to maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly.

6.  Avoid going barefoot

When you go barefoot, you are more likely to develop hammertoe because your toes must work harder to grip the ground. Make sure to wear shoes or slippers when you are at home to protect your feet.
